One of Hindley Streets best-kept secrets, Ancient World is the perfect venue for the alternative and artistic crowds of Adelaide. While officially a space of the CBDs most well-known nightlife strip, entry to the prestigious space is harder to find than expected €“ a short walk down from The Woolshed or directly across from the Red Square complex, enter through the alleyway and turn left at the end to find yourself at Ancient Worlds back entrance. The small bar, live music and artists spot might seem out of place considering its close proximity to many commercial clubs, but it provides a breath of fresh air and an interesting and chilled out space.
Admittedly, theres not a whole lot to Ancient World, with one small bar in the middle of the venue, a few couches stuffed in the back and a large empty space that works well as both a stage for live bands and a dance floor €“ but the true gem of this location is the interesting and artistic beer garden as you enter the premises. With a capacity of 100 people, its a great spot for live music and various music and art-based events, all with a progressive flair €“ plus, its a must-see during Fringe season. The drinks menu is predominantly locally sourced, including some specialties from Tassie and SA craft beers.

Adelaide, commonly known as the city of churches, hides another rich historical facet – it’s a city teeming with classic bars and pubs. Strolling through Adelaide, you’re likely to be captivated by its historic houses and striking churches. However, it’s the pubs that often steal the show. These establishments, some of the most majestic and historic in Australia, don’t always get the recognition they deserve. For instance, consider the Newmarket Hotel, a stunning three-story pub from 1883, which, though facing demolition, remains a significant piece of Adelaide’s history.
Another hidden gem is the Beresford Arms Inn on Gilles St. Though no longer operational, its magnificence is undeniable.
