This gorgeous little Barri GŸtic cocktail bar gets its name because you can only get to it via the rickety old fashioned wooden lift. You never know who’ll you be squeezed up against before you make it into the bar itself, but given the young, party-going crowd, it’ll be someone sexy. And judging by the ravishing lot we saw, you might well be praying for it to break down with all of you in it. Should the mechanism disappoint you by getting you to your destination, you’ll find a gem. The decor is heavy on polished wood exposed floorboards, lots of little tables and wooden chairs and there’s plenty of bar seating in a plainly but pleasantly decorated space. Try one of the cocktails (if you’re not sure which, ask the bar tenders or owner, who are always happy to advise though you may have to ask in Spanish, so take a phrase book) or plump for some of the deliciously refreshing cava. We also hear that the Tanqueray G&T is apparently to die for, so if gin’s your thing, you know what to order. There’s also a decent wine list on offer. Although it’s now become a guide book staple, the fact that it’s a tricky place to find unless you know where you’re going means it tends to be more a locals’ hangout than packed with tourists, and though it can get busy, it tends not to be overcrowded or hectic. So you might end up being pleased that lift didn’t break down, after all.
