Best Bars in Adelaide

City of churches is also the city of bars.

Best Bars in Adelaide.

When it comes to alcohol, the first association with South Australia is definitely wine.

However, don’t underestimate the thriving bar scene of the South Australian capital. Wherever you decide to go, you can’t make a mistake. You will equally enjoy a good beer and taste fantastic snacks in some dimly-lit basement-bars or super trendy new places across the city.

1. The Bank Street Social

Bank Street Social specializes in South Australian whiskey and gin, cider, craft beer, and excellent wines. They even named the pizzas after the state’s magnificent food regions. Make a choice between pizzas with Hills potato, Barossa chicken, Murray River pink salt or McLaren Vale olives and enjoy aromatic flavors. The more exciting part comes on Friday and Saturday nights. Enjoy the state’s best with excellent DJs playing all night long.

2. Africola

Chef Duncan Welgemoed from Johannesburg came to Adelaide and brought fireworks of color, a cacophony of flavor, and excellent taste for music from Africa to this beautiful Australian city. Africola is an unbelievable hospitable, happy, and buzzing place that reminds me of Afrikaans Heritage Day. Come here to taste an apricot jam coated salmon from a centrally positioned barbecue and a cocktail which usually includes ingredients you have probably never heard of.

3. Casablabla

Casablabla is a cocktail bar, Latin dance classroom, function room, tapas lounge, and beer garden at Leigh Street. This modern restaurant which takes over the corner shop space is bustling on Friday and Saturday nights with a stream of extraordinary DJs. Spend $10 for an excellent pizza from Thursday through Saturday or experience paella night on Tuesday night. Upstairs, a charming expert will take you through some simple moves in the hot rhythms of the samba. WOW!

4. Apoteca

Apoteca owners simply transformed an old warehouse and created a miracle in the heart of the city. With its antique furnishings and amazingly restored pharmacy cabinets, this bar will hark back you to the golden age of dining. You can’t go wrong if start off with a Spritz and a generous portion of the baked goat’s chevre (with blanched almonds and seedless grapes!). Have a little chat with knowledgeable staff that will help you with any possible dilemma. Worth to spend time at this place!

5. The Howling Owl

The Howling Owl sums up the past, the present, and the future of Adelaide with its unique personality. You can pick out any South Australian beer, one of more than 80 gins, and some exotic wine from the list. After discovering the menu made up of ready-made sandwiches (expect ingredients such as Black Forest ham, dukkah-spiced chicken breast, or Limestone Coast Wagyu), move to the adjoining Urban Cow Studio, the gift shop and the gallery space in one. And enjoy!

6. Maybe Mae

This 1950s cocktail lounge is not the easiest one to discover. You should make a little effort to find it in the tunnel between Leigh and Peel Streets behind the timber-clad wall, without any signs or doors. Once you find Maybe Mae, lay back in a green leather booth and enjoy a low ceiling which makes this place atmosphere like in some secret society. Drink your cocktails such as the Bill Murray (apricot brandy, Japanese whiskey, mint, and citrus) amongst decadent brass embellished mirrors and exotic flowers and enjoy feeling special.

7. Udaberri Pintxos Y Vino

Udaberri Pintxos Y Vino achieves the rare balance of European theme and the Australian spirit. As a soft reminiscence of Europe, this overcrowded place will captivate you with delicious tapas, unavoidable Sherries, and excellent wine. Admire DJs playing vintage tracks while enjoying the décor of a graffiti wall, a wall of recycled bottles, wooden beams and barrels, and bench seats. It is a pleasure to be served by charming and effortlessly cool staff. Cheers!
