The spirit of the Adelaide CBD

Adelaide's Red Hen Gin

BarAdvisor had a chance to talk to Alex, the sales and marketing coordinator at the Adelaide Red Hen gin distillery, to get more information about the brand, the history, and the award-winning Classic Dry Gin.

Quick Intro About Red Hen Gin?

The Red Hen Gin is a proud South Australian business and the first distillery based in the Adelaide CBD. The Red Hen name is taken from the old Redhen Railcars that serviced metropolitan Adelaide from 1950 up until the mid 1990s. They use both local and imported botanicals to produce two delicate, balanced, and smooth Gins. Classic Dry Gin has taken out significant awards, including Best Classic Dry at the 2019 Australian Gin Awards. Their newest addition Ultra Violet Dry Gin has been a hit nationwide since its release in December 2020.

Started By Three(Four) Brothers

The business was founded in 2017 by the three Vallelonga brothers and a fourth honouree brother Luke Page. It was a way of continuing their long-time appreciation for all things Gin. After endless nights of perfecting the recipe, it was finally available to the public. The Red Hen Gin is now sold in bars and bottle shops across Australia.

Local botanicals

One of the botanicals in their Classic Dry is a native berry known as Muntrie Berries. These berries grow along the Southern Coastline of Australia, predominantly in the states of South Australia and Victoria. For the Ngarrindjeri people of the Coorong (located in modern-day southeast SA), they are an old favorite in the historical diet and were traded with other tribes. In terms of Red Hen Gin, the berries provide a beautiful, spicy apple characteristic.

Future looks Bright

Red Hen Gin is looking to continue growing the business, featuring Red Hen Gin in more and more bars around Australia. There is also the possibility of releasing additional products under the Red Hen name.

Bar Advisor loves Red Hen gin. We are looking forward to seeing what other products Red Hen is going to create. We can’t wait to see it in most of the bars around South Australia and Australia.

Enjoy your next G&T with Red Hen.

Cheers!
