BarAdvisor had a chance to talk to Suzanne Vermeulen from Prickly Moses to discuss all things about sustainable beer.

Purest ingredients

Great beer comes from good water, and Prickly Moses sources the best. Their handcrafted, natural brewing process begins right here in the Otways, where pure rainwater from the lush rainforests is used. They believe that leaving a sustainable, responsible footprint on our environment is as essential. That’s why they’ve implemented even more green initiative at the brewery. They use solar electricity to supplement the use of grid electricity and donate their spent grain to local farmers who use it as animal fodder. To that, they add in responsibly sourced, high-quality ingredients to create flavour profiles and aromas that invigorate the senses and leave your taste buds begging for more.

Started from the love of beer

In 2007, after many years of research (and many samples of beer), the decision was made by Janine Rose (owner) to build a craft brewery on site at Otway Estate Winery. Otway Estate Winery became Otway Estate Winery & Brewery, Home of Prickly Moses Handcrafted Beers. Although originally a winery, they embraced beer and brewing as much as the love for fine wine. The release of the first two beers took place in March 2007.
Otway Brewing is the manufacturer and distributer of Prickly Moses Handcrafted Beer and Forbidden Fuit Cider. The management of the brewery and winery has been separate for years, but in 2019, the winery was sold and is now called Otway Estate Vineyards. The winery, brewery and cidery still work together very closely to offer the ultimate flavour experience to visitors.

Sustainable future

Prickly Moses is proudly independent, proudly Australian made, and proud to continue exploring and creating the most delicious beers around from the finest ingredients with the best environmental practices in the industry. Because that’s what you deserve, and it’s what Mother Nature deserves too. We’ll drink to that.
