In trouble or Just Uncomfortable?

The Power of the Angel Shot

In a world where women still don’t always feel safe, it’s disheartening that we’re still grappling with this issue in 2024. Fortunately, there’s a simple code to enhance safety for women in bars – the “Angel Shot.” So, if someone were to ask you for one, what would you do? You might instinctively reach for your smartphone to decipher its meaning. Unfortunately, this lack of understanding can put someone’s life in jeopardy. In some regions, they even say “Angela” to make things more confusing. Let’s demystify it. If you feel endangered, don’t hesitate – just tell the bartender.

Empowering Women to Ask for Help

What we really need to do is empower women to ask for help when needed, and remind them that there are decent men out there. The code word to ensure their safety? It’s as simple as “Angel Shot” or “Angela.”

When you order an Angel Shot, be clear about how you want it:

“Neat” means you simply need an escort until you’re out of the situation.
“With Ice” implies that they should call you a taxi or Uber.
“With Lime” signifies that you want them to call the police.

The Bartender Already Knows

In moments of discomfort or danger, the bartender is often already aware. Bartenders witness a myriad of peculiar incidents in bars and are skilled at reading body language. They’re likely waiting for you to ask for help. Most bars and bartenders prefer not to make a scene or have their establishment associated with bad stories, so they tend to hold back unless prompted.

Don’t hesitate to ask for help if you’re in trouble.

For Bar Owners and Managers

If you manage a bar, consider posting an “Angel Shot” poster in the women’s restroom. This small act can make your female patrons feel safer. You can use any code you prefer, but we recommend simplicity – just “Ask for Angel Shot.”

Make sure your staff is well-trained and knows how to handle these situations. Avoid having overzealous bartenders starting confrontations. Remember, while someone may be asking for help, the other patron is innocent until proven otherwise. Your sole responsibility is ensuring the safety of the individual seeking assistance.

Pride Can Lead to Trouble

There are numerous ways to extricate yourself from an uncomfortable date: inform a waiter, bartender, or another woman in the restroom, or simply send a text to a friend. Don’t let pride prevent you from asking for help. No one will judge you for thinking a situation is a bit dodgy. Requesting assistance, even if it leads to a few minutes of embarrassment, is better than the alternative.

We’ve all been through challenging nights, even men. The key is getting through them, and help is always available – you just need to ask.

Angel Shot or Angela: Speak Up

Remember the code – Angel Shot, Angle Shot, or Angel Shot. However, if you ever find yourself in a life-threatening situation, don’t hesitate to speak directly. Say, “I NEED SOME HELP” or “CALL THE POLICE.” We endorse the concept of codes to enhance safety, but we also believe it’s crucial to educate women that asking for help doesn’t make them weak.

Please share your thoughts and any personal experiences you’ve had. Are there any other codes you’ve come across that have helped ensure safety in bars?
