Vermouth is a modern version of fortified wines, created in the 18th century in Turin, Italy. The name came from “wermut”, which means wormwood in German. Wormwood was a common ingredient in the elaboration of fortified wine, which earned the name of Vermouth when consumed in England in the 16th century. The name stood, even though in the 20th century wormwood was banned from consumption due to its toxicity.
Around 1800 to 1813, the first pale, dry version of the drink was produced. In the same 18th century, it became an important part of cocktails, such as the Martini and the Manhattan.
