What’s the difference between the Boston Shaker and the Cobbler Shaker?

In the bartending world, there are many vital tools that you’ll need to work efficiently when making cocktails and mixing concoctions. These tools are called shakers, most used ones are called the Boston Shaker and the Cobbler Shaker. But what is the difference? Is there any advantage of using one or the other? Because of this highly debated topic, there are many supporters for each type of shakers. Let’s get the discussion started!

Boston Shaker.

This mixer consists of two containers; one made of metal and another one made out of glass. The metal one is much bigger in size, holding at least 800ml of liquid or even more in some variations. And the glass container is much smaller, usually being half of the metal ones’ size.

Pros:

Because it’s bigger, you can easily make at least 800ml of mixes each time (depends on size).

Cons:

It’s not so easy to use it since it requires practice. Also, it requires the use of a separate strainer.

Cobbler Shaker.

This one is a 3-part mixer with a built-in strainer at the top. It’s also entirely made out of stainless steel, which makes it more durable. Another perk of this shaker is that it comes with a metal cap that works great as a measuring cup in the case you don’t have a jiggler.  It’s efficient, easy to use, and great for low volumes of work. However, it is smaller in size, which means it’s a no-no for busy bars out there.

Pros:

Great for practicing mixing skills, or trying out new blends.

Cons:

Not so great if you need to make many cocktails at the same time.

Verdict: This one is a tie!

Even though most professionals out there use and prefer the Boston Shaker, the Cobbler shaker is great for low-key bars and home-bars. The Cobbler also has an advantage; it’s surely better for keeping all the mixed flavours in an individual cocktail intact. This can be harder to achieve with the Boston Shaker if you make large amounts of mixes. However the advantages of the Boston Shaker are obvious; if you’re an experienced bartender, this is the most vital tool you will need!
