A brief history of Bachelors Walk
Bachelors Walk was named after a property developer who built here in the 1670’s. In 1832 No. 30 Bachelors Walk was occupied by Mr.John McMullan, one of Dublin’s first wine merchants. In 1914 a group of nationalist protesters marched on Bachelors Walk and were met by Major Alfred Haig and his men. Three protesters were shot dead and many others wounded. This became know as “The Bachelors Walk Massacre”. Padraig Pearse considered “The Bachelors Walk Massacre” to be an iconic moment in the struggle for Irish Independence. A young boy Luke Kelly was wounded in that massacre and his son, also named Luke, went on to found the Dudliners and became one of Ireland’s leading ballad singer.
