Imagine living in Oklahoma City in the early 1900s, looking for entertainment. Most likely you'd go to the most popular leisure spot in town, Belle Isle.
Earliest records show that from 1884 to 1887 Robert Lake owned the portion of rangeland that would be eventually known as Belle Isle. The Land Run of 1889 brought government orders to vacate all property but ultimately that same plot was re-claimed by a man named Butler. After changing hands several times, the Oklahoma Railway Company purchase the land in 1907 and built a dam to forge a large lake. Belle Isle Lake supplied steam power to the growing city's electric cars and trolleys. Over the years the area grew to include an amusement park boasting dancing pavilions, picnic areas, a shooting gallery, canoe rides, and a roller coaster.
