The Last Straw: Bars Consider Alternatives to Plastic Straws

  • By BA Admin

The Straw Quandary: A Changing Perspective

It’s clear that paper, bamboo, and wheat straws aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. They might taste a little off and definitely look different than what we’re used to. Nevertheless, using plastic straws these days is falling out of favor—especially at bars that continue to offer them.

It’s an interesting dynamic: when a bar chooses to use an eco-friendly straw, it generally doesn’t detract from the overall experience. But when a bartender automatically pops a plastic straw into our drinks, it can shift the mood. The point is, as of now, providing plastic straws without asking is a decision that invites criticism.

So, why not stick with plastic straws? The short answer is, they’re not recyclable. The longer explanation is that while most plastic straws technically could be recycled, they usually aren’t. They either get tossed away or are too problematic for recycling companies to handle. So the most reasonable step is to transition away from this outdated item.

Making Ethical Choices

Let’s face it: refusing a plastic straw won’t save the planet single-handedly. However, when greener alternatives are available, why cause unnecessary harm? In the United States alone, an estimated 500 million straws are used daily. That’s a staggering number, and it represents an immense amount of waste for something so trivial.

For those who enjoy a good drink, the absence of a plastic straw shouldn’t be a deal-breaker. So the next time a bartender reaches for a plastic straw, a simple “no thank you” should suffice.

Advice for Bar Owners

Quality and cost are often cited as reasons to avoid making the switch to eco-friendly straws. But, as a responsible business owner, there’s much you can do. For starters, create cocktails that don’t require straws. Second, when offering a straw, present it as an option, not the default. This can not only save you money but also speed up the drinking process, potentially leading to more sales.

The Bottom Line

Companies offering eco-friendly straws should focus less on branding and more on the essentials like competitive pricing and reliable delivery. Eventually, as the demand for green alternatives grows, prices will come down, making it easier for bars and nightclubs to make the switch.
